Jim was born on August 7, 1930 in Puyallup, Washington as the 7th child to Engelbert and Magdolena. He graduated from Fife High School in 1948 as a Trojan Knight. Jim then joined the United States Marine Reserves, and later the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War on the USS Leonard F. Mason. Jim married Loris Brainard on October 17, 1953 in Kent, Washington. After moving to Milton, Jim worked for Knutson Construction and Peas and Sons, and was a lifetime member of the Carpenters Local 470.

Jim was an accomplished carpenter, spending his working years building homes and schools, in addition to his family home and cabin. He was a generous man, who filled his retirement by helping others with any project mentioned to him. Above all, Jim was a loyal friend and devoted husband, and a proud father, Papa and Great Papa.

A memorial is scheduled for May 27, 2017 at 10:00AM at Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Jim's life. Condolences for the family can be left in Jim's online guest book.
